Firefly Magic® Firefly Lights have been recognized for their contribution to firefly research in The American Naturalist, a leading scientific journal published for the American Society of Naturalist by the University of Chicago Press,.

While fireflies are fun to watch as they flash, flicker, and fade on a warm summer's evening, they are also the focus of scientific research. Fireflies also know as lightning bugs, are one of a small number of species that create their own bioluminescence. Learning more about how and why these tiny creatures flash signals to each other is the subject of ongoing scientific research, and Firefly Magic® Firefly Lights are there to help.

The scientific paper title, "Energy and Predation Costs of Firefly Courtship Signals" published in Volume 170, Number 5 of The American Naturalist, was authored by William A. Woods Jr., Holly Hendrickson, Jennifer Mason, and Sara M. Lewis, Professor, Department of Biology, Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts.

The subject of this research study was animal courtship signals, specifically a comprehensive assessment of signal (flashing) cost for Photinus fireflies (Coleoptera: Lampyridae), using controlled experiments to measure both the energy and predation costs associated with their bioluminescent courtship signals.

To successfully conduct the research, Dr. Lewis required reliable artificial fireflies that would exactly mimic the flash patterns of the Photinus Greeni firefly. Dr. Lewis contacted Stephen Taylor, inventor of Firefly Magic® Firefly lights, and patent holder on the methodology of using microprocessors to recreate accurate firefly flash patterns. Her objective was to obtain a device that would correctly reproduce the unusual flash pattern of the Photinus Greeni.

Taylor designed and built the units described in the study as follows: "We used battery-powered microprocessors to drive 565nm LEDs (Lampyridae Lures, Firefly Magic, Apple Valley, CA) that were programmed to accurately simulate the typical mating signals produced by P. greeni males (paired 100-ms pulses separated by a 1,200-ms interpulse interval).

At the end of the Study, the following acknowledgement was listed: "We thank S. Taylor at Firefly Magic (http://www.fireflymagic.com) for providing us with Lampyridae Lures . . ."

In recognition of the importance of Firefly research, Stephen Taylor and Firefly Magic® donated both the development time and research firefly lures to Tufts University.

The movie production of "Fireflies in the Garden" starring Julia Roberts, Carrie-Anne Moss, Willem Dafoe, Hayden Panettiere, and Shannon Lucio selects Firefly Magic® Firefly Lights as their firefly special effects supplier.

Filmed primarily in Austin, Texas, the need to produce cost effective firefly effects were an important part of the shooting. Rather than employ costly computer graphics to create the firefly special effects, the Firefly Magic Firefly Lights were used against a 'blue screen' and subsequently superimposed onto the background.

Stephen Taylor, Lighting Effects Designer for the Sigma Two Group LLC, said, "While CG (computer graphics) creates a very nice effect, it is generally more expensive to implement. When a production is limited in the amount they can spend for special effects, more creative solutions are often considered. In this case, we were pleased that we could support the production by custom designing units that produced higher output firefly flashing which allowed for adjustment during the editing process."

The United States Patent and Trademark Office issues a patent to Stephen Taylor, Managing Partner of the Sigma Two Group LLC, for the method of recreating the visible spectrum emissions of fireflies through the use of microprocessor technology.

Originally filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 2004, the application for patent was granted on May 1, 2007 to Stephen Taylor, the inventor of the most accurate methodology in the world for recreating the flashing of fireflies. The patented method and devices utilize microprocessors which are extremely accurate in activating any plurality of light emitting devices within the visible electromagnetic spectrum.

Firefly Magic® Firefly Lights have been using the patented technology since late in 2004 for both backyard electronic fireflies, and also for commercial installations throughout the world.

The HGTV (Home & Garden Television) show I Want That! featured Firefly Magic™ Firefly Lights on their January 11, 2006. The show had a segment featuring Jim Trimingham, a high school biology teacher who installed Firefly Magic™ Firefly Lights at his home in Sacramento, California last July.

Constructive Display of New York selected Firefly Magic™ Firefly Lights for use in their latest display system for MACY'S Department Store located on Broadway in New York.

The famous Macy's Department Store, host of the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, is featuring Britney Spears new fragrance Fantasy in their 6 grand windows that face Broadway, plus two adjacent windows. Each of the windows depicts a magical woodland scene, including the flashing, flickering, and fading of over 200 Firefly Magic™ Firefly Lights throughout the displays.

"Firefly Magic™ Firefly Lights were selected because of their very realistic and lifelike mimicry of real fireflies in nature." Paul Zacharek of Constructive Display headed the project and was looking for a realistic recreation of fireflies in the woods. The result seemed to please the thousands of people that walk by the Macy's Broadway windows each day.
